September 26, 2018

Your garden fence is an integral part of your home. It clearly defines your boundaries and can keep intruders out. However, the weather that we have in the UK is not particularly kind fencing and so, it is important that you look after it, to ensure that it lasts as long as possible.

If looked after correctly, your fencing can last for years but it is a vulnerable part of your garden that requires attention. Follow the tips below to keep your garden and your fence panels looking their best.

Replace broken panels

Heavy winds and mischievous children can cause damage to your fencing. However, when you do find that one of your fence panels has been broken, you need to act fast. A split or snapped piece of fencing will only mean that it is exposed to the elements and that means that it is likely to be susceptible to rot. So replace them and keep your garden looking good.

Deal with any old surface wood

Over time, your fencing can start to look old. It can become grey looking and often, the surface wood will begin to peel away. A power washer will help you to remove the dead wood on the surface, helping to enhance the appearance. Along with this, it will also help to reduce the chance of rot or damp from setting into the wood.

Treat it with oils and preservatives

The market is now awash with many different oils and preservatives, all of which promise to keep your garden fence looking its best and weather resistant. Some of thee oils also come with a hint of colour to make the wood look lighter, darker and richer.

Decking oil is a prime example as this will help to treat the wood but also keep it resistant and supple at the same time. It will also provide protection from the sun, which can cause the wood to bleach. An oil treatment will help to enhance the lifespan of your fence while preventing splitting and discolouring.

Stain your fencing

There are many different stains available that enable you to add colour to your fence panels if you wish. There are now bright colours available as well as more natural colours, provide an array of options. Whatever you choose, select one that offers a high level of water resistance, as that can help to protect your fencing even further.

What you are looking for is for the stain to cause the water to bead on the surface, as that then means that the water is not penetrating the wood. You can then refresh the stain every year or two to keep it looking good while also enhancing protection.

There are many different types of fencing available but they require an element of care to ensure that they remain looking good. If you put in the effort, then you could quite easily help your fence to last longer and continue to look good.
